Chapter Fifteen

The intel was always good with this crew. Tate knew of Brock, knew the bare minimum regarding his so-called Termination Department. He’d done a few jobs for them already and there had been no surprises.

Tate’s current quarry was on the run; their last stop had been at a cheap motel off the Interstate. From what Tate had been told, the group was a low-level terror cell who’d tried to pull off some kind of heist in a bar in Gary, Indiana, and had gotten their asses handed to them.

They’d probably gotten out of Chicago the fastest way possible and had now stopped to lick their wounds.

Brock’s team had sent along a description and the bonus nugget that one or more may have been wounded.

Tate mulled over the information and wondered if Brock had put the group up to it; they had failed, and now he wanted to remove any link between them. It was standard operating procedure with guys like Brock, Tate knew. Happened all the time.

The motel was old, probably built five decades ago and looked like it had seen much better days. The structure was an L-shape with a dozen cars parked in front of their respective rooms. It was called the Lazy Inn and the aluminum siding, originally dark blue, was now speckled with rust and swaths of it were missing. The roof was discolored and the parking lot’s asphalt surface was cracked and choked with weeds.

Tate steered his rental car into the far corner of the lot and popped the trunk. He opened the suitcase and saw a set of two pistols, both of them Glock 17s with threaded barrels. Each pistol had a sound suppressor and Tate screwed them into place, then loaded each gun. He put a spare magazine in each pocket although he was fairly confident he wouldn’t be needing the extra ammunition.

The car he’d been told to look for was a Ford Taurus – the classic shitty rental car used by the bargain basement car rental companies. They bought cars that had been used and discarded by their bigger competitors and tried to squeeze every last mile they could out of them.

Tate spotted the vehicle in front of Room 17, the third to last room on the right side of the L. He considered the dilemma. Even the dumbest criminals wouldn’t park their car directly in front of their room, especially if they had a remote idea someone might be looking for them.

However, he also didn’t want to spend all night waiting for some sign of which room was occupied by the Taurus’s owner.

Tate got back into his car and pulled up right next to the Taurus. He shut the car off and studied his key fob. First, he hit the Lock button and heard all four doors lock into place. Next, he found the panic button at the very bottom of the fob. He pressed and held it.

The car erupted with the horn honking and his hazards flashing. Tate calmly sat amid the cacophony and studied the doors.
